The partnership with the Cherokee Nation provides state-of-the-art eye care to this under-served population. Annually, students, residents, and faculty experience more than 40,000 patient encounters. An optometric residency will vastly increase your clinical experience and self-confidence, as well as the scope and depth of knowledge in the emphasis areas of your choosing. There is an increasing demand for residency-trained optometrists in careers within schools and colleges of optometry, referral/surgery centers, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and more. One of only 23 optometric training schools in the nation, the Oklahoma College of Optometry at Northeastern State University prides itself on developing world-class optometrists with practical experience both in and out of the classroom, as well as post-graduate clinical residency certification and continuing optometric education. Building Excellence: A Vision for the Future Seven years of planning and programming will result in a 78,000-square-foot, $39 million dollar optometry complex to serve the community, students, residents and alumni. The new complex will feature state-of-the-art equipment, the latest classroom technology, specialized clinics for low vision, vision therapy, vision rehabilitation, primary care and contact lenses, as well as a surgical suite for Oklahoma optometry’s expanded scope of practice. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility was held on June 29, 2023. With an anticipated construction time of two years, the expects to take occupancy of the building in the summer of 2025.
